THEY WILL BE STRONGER WHEN PLAYERS

LothianThistle 2 Tartan 2

After a shocking opening game display, losing 7-4 to Broughton, Lothian
really had their work cut out against Tartan; 12 players were unavailable
for the game and just when we felt things could not have got worse, Colin
Tomassi pulled up in the warm up with a reoccurrence of his calf strain.
This meant a start for coach Ian Haxton and a place on the bench for Chris
Brennan!

After spending the opening minutes containing Tartan, Lothian started to
come more into the game and on the 15 minute mark a through ball from James
Spence allowed Ian Haxton to take a touch and hit a magnificent left foot
shot which just shaved the outside of the post!  A major relief for those
players watching; if it had gone in they would never have heard the last of
it!

Lothian were more than holding their own and it came as a shock when Tartan
opened the scoring.  A long ball from Tartan wasn't cleared properly. The
ball spun wide to a Tartan forward whose shot squirmed beneath goalkeeper
Andy Leask.

Half time 1-0 to Tartan.

Tartan started the 2nd half with more possession and Lothian just couldn't
keep the ball long enough to make any impression on the game.  With about
20 minutes remaining, a long ball out to Lothian's left resulted in a cross
into Lothian's box and the ball was swept into the net.  Although Tartan's
scorer looked well offside the goal stood and in the protests which
followed, Barry O'Donnell was sent off  for a 2nd bookable offence.

At 2-0 down, and a man down, it looked as though Lothian were well on the
way to defeat however every player raised their game.  James Spence and
Grant Casey started to dominate in midfield with Craig Mackintosh and
Fraser Golden causing Tartan all sorts of problems on the flanks.  With 15
minutes remaining, James Spence pulled a goal back side footing a loose
ball in the box past the Tartan's keeper.

This spurred Lothian on and it came as no surprise when Craig Mackintosh
beat the Tartan left back and unleashed a great left foot shot in off the
post to square the match.

In spite of constant pressure towards the end of the game, Lothian couldn't
get the winner but against all odds, the team pulled together to achieve a
great result in the circumstances.

Lothian showed tremendous spirit in the face of all sorts of difficulties
with every player working incredibly hard for each other, particularly when
they went down to 10 men.  Hopefully some more players will be available
for Wednesday's game against SASA which will be equally hard.
