League Cup Q Section

Civil SS V Lothian Thistle Hutchison cc

Lothian THISTLE'S rebuilt squad, under the shrewd management of their experienced new boss Mark Lamb, started their League Cup qualifying section with a well deserved 2-0 victory against their Capital rivals, Civil Service Strollers..
The first serious piece of action was in the seventh minute when a calculated curling shot from John Dunn was net bound until Kevin Swain in the Lothian goal launched himself to palm the ball wide. It was to prove a vital save because almost immediately Lothian stormed to the other end of the park where they were awarded a penalty kick when the Strollers defender Liam Jack unceremoniously upended the advancing Mark Kelly. However, Conan McDiarmid's spot kick hit the post, rebounded on to the head of the sprawling Cadger in the Strollers goal and was eventually kicked to safety.

Lothian steadily gained the upper hand and after 35 minutes they took the lead. Jack conceded a needless free kick and Lee placed an accurate cross which Jamie Hawkins headed down to Joe Murray who had the straightforward task of steering the ball into the net from close range. It was a lead which the visitors merited and
less than one minute into the second half they doubled their advantage. Kenny Fisher sprinted down the right touchline and his cut-back from the bye-line was hit behind Cadger from ten yards by Hawkins.

The Strollers were left with a mountain to climb although, only one minute later, they could have reduced the deficit when substitute Chris Inglis was left with only Swain to beat but the goalkeeper made another excellent save. Ewan MacIntosh then tested Swain with a 30-yard free-kick before Inglis was again handily placed but hit his shot wide of the target.

Dunn was then denied by Swain before Jack headed over from a good position as the Strollers threatened to pull themselves back into contention. However, Lothian repelled their every attack and on the counter substitute Omar Ali set up Craig Stevenson who hit a 25-yard shot only inches over the crossbar. Ali then missed a gilt-edged opportunity from only four yards out as Lothian finished the game on the ascendancy
